Praying in the Kingdom

by on June 27, 2012

In Luke 10 Jesus tells his disciples to pray in the kingdom, but then leaves them hanging, without any explanation.

In ch.11: 1-13 that gets put right.

‘Teach us to pray’ – you’ve told us to pray, now teach us how.

Jesus teaches them:

  1. What to pray: for God’s kingdom to arrive in the world now
  2. How to pray in the kingdom: with patient persistence, because we know that God will do it by his Spirit

These are things that have shaped our church life powerfully over the past 18 months. Core business for us – praying for God’s Spirit to be poured out and his kingdom to come, releasing the prisoners in Canterbury. No point making efforts in mission without this. Who was it that said, ‘Until you have prayed there is nothing you can do. But once you have prayed, there is much you can do.’ Can’t remember, but he was onto something!
