A troubling comment from a young nurse

by on February 5, 2014

I was talking with a young woman who’s a nurse today. I suggested that people’s lives were less tidy and more complicated than we often like to imagine they are.

She replied that she’d had the chance to see that in nursing. In the hospital she came across people from all walks of life, with all kinds of problems. She got a sense of how diverse and messy people were.

But, she went on, ‘I couldn’t help noticing that I only met those people in the hospital – never at church.’

Ouch! That one observation says a whole bunch doesn’t it.

One question it pushes in our faces is: if those people were to turn up to our churches, with all their messed-upness, would we want it?

It’s a scary thought that the answer may really be no.  Makes you wonder where does the problem lie, the problem that’s keeping Sydney-siders away from church in droves? Is the problem ‘out there?’ Or is it in here?
